listening to: Set Your Goals

Here’s some pop punk from some guys that you may not heave heard of. Set Your Goals is like the band that blink-182 would be if they took some more creative liberties with song structure, and could actually sing (not to knock one of my favorite childhood groups). The band does some cool things with backing vocals, and has some dang catchy melodies.

Unfortunately, Sad Steve only has this song:
Set Your Goals – Latch Key

listening to: Of Montreal

So I don’t see what all the hype about this new album from Of Montreal is all about. Personally, Skeletal Lamping is a bit of a let down after their last, and undeniably spectacular album Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?. The group seems to have strayed from their formula of psychedelia-over-beck-like-grooves toward a sort of falsetto dancehall pop in which Kevin Barnes sounds eerily like David Byrne. Funny enough, the one song that mentions “skeletal lamping/ to control the sphere/ false priest” isn’t even on the album and is in fact really good (Faberge Falls for Shuggie). I can’t hate though because these guys really are the only group of their kind. Some shit to dig:

Of Montreal – Faberge Falls for Shuggie
Of Montreal – Cato as a Pun
Of Montreal – Lysergic Bliss

On another note, listening to the amazing acapella section of that last song made me think of that Flaming Lips song:
The Flaming Lips – The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song

listening to: Dr. Dog

This group first came to my attention when they performed last spring at Skidmore College. Their particular breed of lo-fi indie, with its detuned piano, endearing vocals and swooning guitar riffs falls somewhere between the Beatles and Arcade Fire. These guys were amazing live, and I’m interested to see where they go from here. Check it.

Dr. Dog – The Girl

Arcade Fire – Wake Up

Dr. Dog – The Way the Lazy Do

Dr. Dog – The Ark
